Asset Summit 2014 – Post Event Report

The Asset Summit Africa, organised by Codub Consulting in conjunction with the UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), took place on African soil for the first time this year. Nearly 200 delegates, including senior executives and representatives of government ministries, attended the two-day summit. Peter Carter, the Deputy British High Commissioner to Nigeria, both opened and closed the event.

In response to huge demand from attendees at the previous event – held over five days in London in 2013 – the venue chosen for the Asset Summit Africa 2014 was the Eko Hotel in Lagos, Nigeria. The two-day summit themed around “Reducing Costs, Improving Safety and Increasing Profitability through Effective Asset Management and Maintenance” surpassed its primary objective with almost 200 delegates attending.

Peter Carter, the Deputy British High Commissioner to Nigeria, both opened and closed the event. Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Works and Intercontinental Hotel & Resorts were among the main sponsors, while the Nigerian High Commission, London, the Federal Ministry of Power joined the Nigerian Society of Engineers as official supporters of the summit.

The Honourable Minister of Works, Arc. Mike Onolememen, who was represented by Engr. Tunde Ekunsumi (Project Director & Head of PPP), delivered a key presentation on “How the provision and maintenance of our road assets impacts on the whole community”.

A masterclass on Reliability-Centred Maintenance by Mark Norris remained packed full until 7pm. Femi Akintunde, Managing Director of the summit’s strategic partner AlphaMead Facilities and Management Services Ltd., said that the quality of the speakers exceeded the impressive line-up in London in 2013. He also presented various papers including the role of regulation as well as trends in Facilities Management (FM) Outsourcing.

The Federal Ministry of Water Resources endorsed the summit by expressing interest in partnering with Codub Consulting to develop asset management policies and training for staff at its water agencies.

Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Works and Intercontinental Hotel & Resorts were among the main sponsors, while the Nigerian High Commission, London, the Federal Ministry of Power joined the Nigerian Society of Engineers as official supporters of the summit.

The challenges and opportunities in the power sector were highlighted by Dr. Sam Amadi’s presentation titled “The Role of Policy & Legislation in Infrastructure Asset Management in the Electricity Industry”.

One of the top Asset Management Consultant from the UK, Mr. Clive Deadman highlighted the complexity in addressing water asset management and this was followed by an insightful presentation by the Honourable Minister of Water Resources, Mrs. Sarah Reng Ochekpe, who was represented by Engr. Benson Ajisegiri (Head of Water Reform & PPP). The presentation on “Providing sustainable access to safe and sufficient water through efficient Asset management” was well received by the audience and provided insight into the numerous opportunities within the sector. The minister concluded by wishing to partner with CODUB to develop asset management policies and training for the operatives of the water agencies.

The biggest challenge of bringing this event to Nigeria was making sure that the speakers had expertise in African issues as well as being aware of specific challenges in Nigeria. Dr Lanre Okunribido and Mr. Ola Fajobi both based in the UK brought with them stability with their third participation at this summit. Mr. Mark Norris and Mr. Obi Ozonzeadi added to this continuity by returning after their first experience in London in 2013.

Dr Tunde Bammeke and Mr Mark Whyte joined the CODUB team of presenters from the UK. Mrs Uloma Umeano also a newcomer completed the line-up with a Nigerian cultural view of Asset Management. Also, presentations by Mr. Aminu Diko, Director General/CEO, Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) and Dr. Wale Bolorunduro, Honourable Commissioner for Finance, Osun State gave the summit a very broad perspective.

The Asset Summit 2015 was planned to be held in Ghana but due to overwhelming demand (over 90% of responses), the next edition will be held one more time in Nigeria before moving to Accra, Ghana.
